  • Broad Beans

I am gardening in Normandy and for the last 2 years although my Broad Beans have grown well the set of seeds has been poor. The vareity I have grown is Aquadulce and they were sown in March. Please can anyone help?

    Hi Roitelet,

I don't grow Aquadulce, but I do grow Super Aquadulce which is a reselection I think (available from HDRA) I've had no problems with mine but but they are past their best now.

I sow mine around Christmas in the greenhouse in pots & as soon as I can move them from the heated Greenhouse to the coldhouse to harden off, this gives me the same result as if I'd sowed them in the autumn (around October is the traditional time around here) as they don't really move over the winter period & I don't loose them to the mice.

Your poor set could be due to warm weather (not knowing the climate in Normandy I'm guessing) as this seems to have been a problem with Runner Beans here this year. Try going over the plants with a watering can as it may be dry as well.

Hope you have better luck next year.

By the way, welcome to the vine.
