  • Help - my sweetcorn looks odd!!

I grew sweetcorn in the garden years ago, and I'm sure it didn't look like mine does that I've planted down the lottie..... my plants down there are about 4ft tall and I thought that the "ears" were about to start shooting, but when I popped down there today, what i thought was going to be the ears of corn, looks more like wheat or something similar - it looks kind of like tassles if that makes sense....... I definately planted sweetcorn, but now I'm having doubts. Can anyone put my mind at rest?

You have found the male parts of the plant, flowers out of the centre at the top, these will have pollen, the 'cob bit' will come from the leaf axels 'on the side' these are the female bits that are yummy.

          Sweet Corn pic's

Sweet corn pics, the first photo is the male bits out of the top of the plant, second pic is the female bits down the side, these are the cobs with browning tassels on.

The third is a photo of a sunflower which has nothing to do with sweetcorn but it looked nice.

One thing you need to do is, make sure that the corn is pollinated (something I didn't do last year)
Every time you go past the plant just tap it to distribute the pollen from the top (male flower) to the cobs on the bottom.

              Edit:
If you look at THIS and see what T-lady suggests, you will probably get even better results
