Treat them like courgettes and sow next spring, they can't go outside till the frosts have finished so don't sow too early!
They aren't poisonous but as daylily says they're too bitter to enjoy!
I like to grow them up our fence, once the plants get going they are really vigourous and can easily hide my neighbour's garden!
My chickens don't eat the plants either so it's something that can be grown around the coop to pretty it up a bit!
The gourds are a real taliking point once dried and used for decoration in the house, they can also be decorated by the children
