Contacted my Parish Council about getting an allotment and the clerk called me back today. He says that he will have a better picture of how many plots are available in a week or so, after the yearly rents are collected or not as the case may be.
He said I'm on the list now and cannot see any problem with me getting a plot straight away! Yippee!
Although I do feel a bit guilty that some people have been on waiting lists, in other areas for months/years.

We have 2 sites in our village, the big one is surrounded by houses and has no sheds. I've gone for the smaller site as it's closer to my house (8 mins walk) and does have sheds on it - I must have a shed, a place to escape from my noisy neighbours pounding music
This site is also surrounded by fields and hedgrows and is a lovely place to be.

The rent is only £14 a year (£7 for OAP's). Bargain!

Now I'm a bit worried as I have never had a plot before. I have read lots of advice on here about taking it steady etc. Well noted.
However, what can I get planted straight away, bearing in mind I probably won't get the plot until November. I hear some people are planting garlic now, will November be too late? Anything else worth planting now?

Get some garlic in, as long as the ground isnt too wet. Also, if you can get hold of any, due to national onion set shortage, get some winter onions in too.
I would be chucking some strawbs in as well.

You can pop a few broad beans in in November too, and some overwintering peas, they'll give you a crop a few weeks earlier than spring sown ones.

That's a point, as I don't know which plot I'll be getting yet, there may be all sorts already there.

I did see a very overgrown plot but also what looked like areas at the end of the site that were just grass. One new plot owner, by the look of it, was cutting new beds from the turf, he had also installed a brand new shed. Very nice. Maybe good to get one of the grass plots as there were no weeds. I don't think it was couch grass, just the ordinary stuff.
