I came on this site a few months ago, asking advice about a few veg in containers.
i now have no garden left to speak of, its covered with buckets and greenhouses, the lawn has been dug up, I am in dispute with the housing about chicken keeping for the future, and the one thing i wasn't going to do was apply for an allotment.

I had my reasons and was vocal about them, i do not drive, i am not as fit as i could be, and the nearest one ( i thought) is a 45 minute walk.

WRONG!!!

it seems there is one five minutes away, so tucked away noone knows its there! its just about at the back of my house, who knew?...plus two more within a 15 minute walk, all three on the application form do NOT have (waiting list) next to them, like others more prominent do, so....

I applied........ for all 3........... my youngest told me too, said he is bored and will help, and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!!!
I hope you are happy, cos now you are going to get nagged rotten for advice, even more than before.

first nag being:
how many rods, cos they are £24 ayear and although to me thats a big outlay at once, I dont want to get too few, if I am asked how many i want?
even one sounds like a lot at this point to be honest so some advice here would be good, cos i know damn well i will go for one and it will not be enough.

but yeah, ya daft bunch, i am converted, and will wait and see, seems their site is out of date and two of them do have waiting lists after all, apart from the one i really want, so....
get busy with the advice, is 5.5 rods enough?

i wouldn't have chickens or ducks on the lottie anyway, iF i can't see em out of the window, they aint safe ;(

Is a full size plot 10 rods? Does this mean 250 square yards?

My plot is quite small compared to some, it measures 17m x 6m, (18.5 yds x 6.5 yds so = 120 sq yards) but it's easily manageable and I can grow enough to feed us (2 adults, 2 teens, 2 younger ones). Not big enough to go self sufficient though.

So... if my thinking that 10 rods = 250 sq yds is right, your plot should be a bit bigger than the one I have. Hope this helps, but others grapes please correct if I've misunderstood the rods bit.

according to their site, a rod is, 25 sq meters..sooo. 5.5 rods is?
i dunno i am rubbish at math, even one rod sounds like a lot, and they charge by 'up to 5.5' at £24 per annum.

It would be normal to charge for 1/2 a plot (5 ROD) or a Full Plot (10 Rod)
so £24 is about right for 1/2.

I would get 10 rods (to start) once you have a few rows of Potatoes in abd a bed of onions you will fill up 1/2 a plot.

thanks for that, obviously i have to wait and see what they offer, but it's good to have an idea in advance, not sure i can afford a full plot for now, but i google earthered the site, and in the last six months only one more plot has appeared so its looking good, if they offer me a full one, i'll beg my son to pay the premium, and take it from there.

I am scared of taking on a lottie because of the committment (and the 60 year waiting list). What do you do with your excess, how do you avoid hitting the 'experts', can you use a 12 bore on vandals, can you use a 12 bore on the committee? I think you're a brave person to make the leap. Oh dear, getting the urge again, mainly because I have already bought the seeds.

Im with you on this Bride. I popped on this forum with a little new veg patch. Now its greenhouse, pots, ongoing fight with hubby re chickens and on a list for a lottie. Admitedly I am a tad obsessive at the best of times but I blame this lot!

Keep an eye on that Lynda, she could hatch you that Rhino if ya not careful

the seeds!! it's definitely the seeds, i have too many for my garden and need to expand into a 10 rod lottie to save wasting £5 worth of seeds!
