My allotment rent is just £8 a year - AND I can pay that in two installments if I want! I think this is ridiculously cheap. In fact, when I first went to look at my lottie and the chap from the Parish Council told me it would be £8, I honestly thought he meant per month, and I would have been happy to pay that too. My plot is 10m x 27m, so a little more than 10 rods of beautiful crumbly loam. There is no fencing and there is a rabbit problem, and there are no facilities or water. It's basically a field sectioned off with corner poles to identify the different plots. Although it is not fenced, it is out of view from the road with a large perimeter bush and even a lot of locals in the village don't know it's there.
I have put my own chicken wire fencing around my plot, and put a shed up with guttering and a large water butt (and lidded bucket for private toileting!). There is no shop or organised facilities, but what there is is a great sense of community and everone is very happy to help and offer advice freely. It is a quiet sanctuary and for that, it is worth £8 a year of anybody's money!
