1st Plot

After a few months on the 3 waiting lists we've just been given our first plot (well 1/2 plot but still 60' x 25' ) and we are so excited .

It was cut back a few months ago so has some grass and weeds but nothing compared to what others have had to clear by reading throught this forum or what the people on the plots next to ours.

There were 4 half plots up for grabs and we were 3rd on the list so got 3rd choice. 1 full plot has not been worked for years and was 8' high in all sorts of stuff until 3 months ago. It has been cleared and dug by JCB but is very, very rough. The other plot has been works up to last year has been strimmed but not dug a few months ago AND also had a shed.

We had 3rd choice. Looking at the rough plot we started working on a plan of attack. The first person on the list made their choice - the top 1/2 of the rough plot . Are they mad we thought ?? Ok so we'll have the bottom 1/2 of the rough plot then. NO !!! the 2nd person took that. Are we dreaming ?? It's our choice and there is still there recently worked plot with a shed left !! We jumpped at it !!

So we now have our plot with a Bonus shed (had to repair 1 broken window but that didn't take long)
Take a look at the pics - what you think ??

So the plan is clear and tidy the shed. Clear the heaps either side of the shed. Get a compost bin from the local council and get it going. Clear and dig over the rest of the plot and split into beds and paths.

So what else can you add to our plan to do now ???

Well done on getting ur plot, great feeling isnt it. GEt some muck on as soon as its dug for the winter. Alot of hard work ahead but its well worth it GOOD LUCK

water butt,get some guttering on that shed to collect water for it, lil camping stove, make tea, stand back and admire plot.

Already got some guttering for the shed and there were 2 steel baths with the plot as well so will use them for now.

Just been shopping and bought klip lock, air-tight containers for tea and sugar. Years of outdoor activities means we have loads of stoves and campign kettles

Just been searching Yell for numbers of scaffhols companies and stables to try and get some free boards and muck.

I'm already starting to think I need to change my car to a 4x4 pick-up to transport all the stuff I need to and from the plot!!

Wow, that's a proper lottie shed. Loads of character. We're still not allowed sheds on our plots but I keep chipping away at the parish council and hope, one day, they will allow them.

where are you located?. theres a lady from a stables in south london who pops up now and again reminding us of all the free muck we can come get from her!. i'm in north londond and plan to go at some stage if i cant find anything more local!.

Good news and good luck with the plot. I'm still waiting for my first plot. The parish council clerk told me they do have plots available and we would be contacted when we could have one. That was a month ago and still no news. Missed all the good weather when I could have been getting it ready.

One thing about your shed. What is it made of? Is it corregated iron or asbestos cement?
If it's asbestos, what condition?. It looks very worn to me and in that case will be shedding (no pun intended) fibres. Not good. Not a complete disaster as you could paint it and that would seal in the fibres or get the council to get rid of it, as it would need a specialist firm to dismantle.
If you keep it then don't drill into it or anything.

Sorry to be a doom monger but wouldn't want you to endanger your future health.

Great news bob, keep up that momentum and this could be the best thing you've done in a long time. Glad you have the most important things sorted - a kettle is a god send and just as important as a spade in my eyes! Best of luck and enjoy!

Snap! I was shown a plot last week (overgrown, mostly grass a few remnants of beds)and decided to take it. Then I got a phone call saying I had been shown the wrong one so I said never mind I still want one. Got the keys this morning so went down today to try and find it. .. . . . .and it is in a better position and has a shed!!! woo hoo! can't wait to get started tomorrow. Pics on my page in the album

Cool !! Nice one you'll have to get some piccys up for us to have a look.

Spent the day at the plot yesterday and made a good start. Sorted the shed and cleared the cr4p next to the shed. Marked out the plot and now have our first bed dug. The plan is to try to find some planks to make raised beds. Taking to camera up this morning to take some more pics

Already met loads of very friendly people who've all offered advice and seem to have a standard line - "don't be affraid to ask and don't buy anything without asking first if I've got it you can have it". The other advice we have off everybody is "don't listen to what X tells you this way is better!!". We've found and been invited to the site's infromal bar and been told we're in the drinkers half of the site . I really don't know how most of these guys get any work done on thier plots they seem to spend all their time talking and helping everybody else.

I'm already finding out that dispite being quite active and fit (ish) doing a lot of mountain biking and canoeing digging uses a whole new set of muscles !!

2 Days on the plot and it's looking much better already but still a lot to do (dam couch grass ). Forgot to take pick today but will add them to my profile soon.

When my plots covered in a foot of snow it looks as tidy as anybody's!!!!!
