I remember many years ago, that Titchmarsh bloke said to put some spuds in a biscuit tin in compost and bury it in the ground and dig them up on Christmas Day. Never got round to it myself but you never know.
The biscuit tin would be easier to dig out the ground if the grounds frozen,protect from slugs,I grow in containers so it’s easy to lift the potatoes out the compost whenever needed,slugs never affect them as they’re in containers of compost with no top growth at all
