  • Main crop spuds

Disappointing results from Desiree this year, any suggestions for an alternative reliable main cropper. I grow Charlotte as a first early and Nicola as a second , both did well despite the weather especially Nicola.Any ideas welcome

Nicola & Charlotte are both second earlies,if you leave the charlottes longer you would have a better yield. Arron pilot or sharpes express are earlies worth trying. Rooster are tasty main crop potatoes, probably need to order online tho,I haven’t seen them in the shops for years.

We grew Victoria as a main crop for years and they were very reliable but Brexit put paid to access to seed this year. We grew Navan and Mozart this year and have had good results.

Sarpo Mira or Picasso are my favourites ... well are the ones that grow best for me, King Edwards are my favourite but it doesn't grow well in my ground

I grew Stemster this year, and although this is so far the only time I've grown it, I was very happy with it. I got just over 40kg from 16 plants, despite the hot, dry weather and the fact that I had to cut the plants down early (17th August) due to blight.

They sell them in Wilko, actually, in 1.5kg net bags. Very cheaply, too.

No idea if this helps but we got (from 10 tubers each) 40lbs from Navan and 42.5 lbs from Marvel

Here's atip for growing spuds that are free from slug damage at harvest, when you plant them my tip is add some slug pellets in the hole next to the seed potato. Then water the tuber and cover, the slug pellets will dissolve into the soil and kill the pests underground and won't pose a danger to your friendly Hedgehogs as the slugs die under the soil surface. Plus birds can't pick the slug pellets up either because they are not on the surface.

I can't imagine that would actually work. The poison in slug pellets is specifically designed to have a short life in soil, and to break down quickly into harmless things. By the time your potatoes are large enough to be threatened by slugs any pellet residue will be long gone, and even if the pellets did kill any resident slugs initially, new ones will simply come in to take their place.
