Welcome to the Vine Shazsull. And yes you are very lucky getting the plot - big queues out there in some places. If it's only grass on the plot then yes, you can just dig it in. Think of it as green manure.

Welcome
It may look like grass, but will most likely have some couch grass in there. As you dig you will see long white roots like spaghetti. Get every bit of it out.
Do not compost it ... it regrows from broken bits of root. Burn or drown it until dead, then you can add to your compost heap. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Hi there and well done on getting an allotment so easily! Take a look at my blog where you'll see what I achieved in the few months following getting my lottie in May this year. Happy digging!

SO SHOULD i just dig out the top layer, and chuck it down the dump?
NO! If you did this on our site you would be plotless again PDQ, as others have said either turn the grass in or dig out the grass shake all the top soil off it (topsoil is the precious bit) and compost it removing all the noxious weeds like couch, dandelion, bindweed, nettles, buttercup these can either be put in a black plastic bag and left to rot down for a year or taken home and put in the dustbin.
