coffee grounds?

Hi someone told me coffee grounds are usefull on the allotment but what for.Are they a soil conditioner or a pest deterent.I have access to vast amounts of these so would like your expert opnions if poss.thanks already

Apparently coffee grounds are great for onions and garlic. Zazen is our resident expert

I read somewhere that worms love them. I always put mine in the compost bin. Makes it smell nice too!

hyper slugs

Gosh didnt think it was a slug deterent, the stuff i get from work is the strong stuff so the thought of slugs being high as a kite on caffiene might make them worse!!!!!!!!! perhaps i better only use the decaff stuff

Coffee grounds are good for making the soil more acidic- and are wonderful to use around blueberry and cranberry bushes..and anything else which needs acidic mulch

I saved all mine in the summer (only OH likes coffee so took bl**dy ages lol) and put them round the lettuces. They were untouched by slugs. The downside is that they get washed away so need to be replenished often, like any 'granule' method. I also used a slug barrier granule from wilkos (pink) and the beds were raised.

I've asked for coffee grounds at Starbucks a few times to put on the garden, they're always happy to give you as much grounds as you want. It increases the organic matter in the soil and also has some useful nutrients.

With used coffee grounds - the caffeine is already gone so don't worry about hyper slugs.

I use it mainly with all my alliums, as a soil improver. I also get mine from Starbucks...but I get bin bags rather than the little ones they package up...they are always happy to get rid of a bin bag at a time.

It's great stuff, esp if you have clay as it really gives it texture.
