I roughly dug it over first

I didn't: I just put down a layer of cardboard, then one of grass clippings, then carried on layering with browns (newspaper, card, autumn leaves) with green (grass clippings, weeds).
The brown layer should be twice as thick as the green layer, but I didn't measure.

Good way to recycle paper, cardboard and straw.

Indeed! I've been begging grass clippings from my neighbours (who said they normally just put it in the bin (council doesn't collect green waste here)

built a raised bed this way today just to try out.

Our school bought a raised bed with their Morrison's vouchers, so I thought I'd fill it this way rather than buying topsoil at over £100.
We started the bed on Friday, and the 3rd photo was taken today. I've been standing on it to tread down the layers as I top up.
