I am trying to locate a gant chart style easy read year planner that will inform a novice like myself when to start sowing. Books that I have read seem to be more specific to fruit and vegetable varieties. A good month by month guide printed in a magazine would be very useful but I only have two of the GYO magazines, so as yet my yearlong database is not established. I could back order the previous ten months but when will I find the time to read through them. Please help.

Hi sticklebricks - welcome to the Vine! As a slight deviation from your idea, I recently sat down with an old diary and went through every packet of seeds I've got, noting when they can be planted, sown, and harvested throughout the year, using the month as a guide. It's meant that I know exactly when to do these things with the seeds I've got. Not quite a year planner, but thought you might find this useful. (If you use an old diary it doesn't cost anything either!) dexterdogBernie aka DDL

Hi sticklebricks and welcome to the vine. As a variation on dexterdog's idea you can also use and old diary to note what you do when including moon phases etc. if so inclined to keep tabs on what works. I used to have all my seeds in large envelopes marked with the months but have switched to putting them in family groups ie. brassicas, roots, toms with chillis and peppers etc., legumes and so on. Trying to help myself with my rotation.
Incidentally Staples do a very large wall planner which is reuseable, ie you can move the date thingies around as they change year to year.

Ive ended up photocopying the year planner bit from the back of an unused diary so I can write in the appropriate dates etc. Will check out the website as well, they will probably do it a lot neater and better than me! dexterdogBernie aka DDL

I went through my seeds and made my own planner using Excel, months across the top of the page and variety of the seeds ( carrots and brassica's so far) down the side, colour in the recomended sowing periods and you have an instant picture of when to sow, nothing worse than sorting through your seed box and finding seeds you should have sown last month.

I do my own planner Sticklebricks as the normal sowing dates don't really relate to this far north. I will have to get to grips with Excel then ....... it would be great to have it from year to year, making a few adjustments to those things that didn't work well. Thanks Paul ..~

year planner..?
Not sure if this is what your looking after, it's a bit pricey. ita a vegetable planning wallchart, laminated, and has info on both sides. http://www.organiccatalog.com/catalo...oducts_id=2250
If you poke about the site and put calendar in the search section you will see a monthly reminder calendar which says's its not year specific so you can use it over and over, and also a biodynamic planner which is also double sided.
Hope that helps. :-)Blogging at..... www.thecynicalgardener.wordpress.com
