Seasons?

OK, this sounds like a really silly question...

In all the gardening books I've read it just gives seasons (e.g. late summer), and I'm trying to make a "plan" for next years growing (our first full year of growing)

When does one turn into another?

I'd class September as early Autumn, but my OH thinks we're in late Summer...

Can anyone clear this up for us?

March, Aprl & May - Spring
June, July & August - Summer
September, October & November - Autumn

Well thats according to my books

if its cold it could be summer
if its wet it could be summer
if its snowing it could be spring or summer

Offically Winter starts on December 22nd,Spring March 22nd,Summer June 22nd, and Autumn September 22nd. For some reason sometimes its the 23rd.

But just to complicate things the first day of summer is also described as midsummers day.

Arn't these dates also solstice dates? Something to do with the sun in a certain quarter or length of day or night? Would like to know!

Yes Squirrel. Sometimes it's the 21st and sometimes the 22nd. The start of the season is marked by these dates. Date in between are Feb 1st/2nd (eostre), Apr 30th/May 1st (beltane), July31st/Aug 2nd (lughnasadagh - the first wheat harvest and making of the first bread for the year) and Oct 31st (samhain - Halloween, which comes from All Hallows Eve. Nov 1st being All Saints Day in the christian church calendar.)

Our seasons are normally identified by the blast of wind we get at the Equinox in March and September!
