Saving Potato Tubers

Hi,
I have only had my allotment for a year and have been on a steep learning curve.I planted some Salad Blue potatoes and had a reasonable result.I read somewhere about saving some small tubers to use for seed but cannot find the article again.Can anyone help.

Hi Toplink,

It's not usually recommended to save your own seed potatoes to re-plant because of disease that they may carry. Also unless you are rigourous in reselection your "strain" of salad blue will eventually weaken and your yeild will decrease.

Having put the fear of God up you ( and I didn't mention The Seed Potatoes regulations 1991 - http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1991/Uksi_19912206_en_1.htm link if your really interested) you can do it.

only pick seed potatoes that are firm and unsprouted. If they are shrivelled and sprouted they have probably been stored to warm. Keep them somewhere cool & dry but frost free & then set them up for chitting next yearas normal.

I have my potatoes ridged and some potatoes are spoiled by the light on the surface. If they are an appropriate size could they be used for seed potatoes?

I guess so Snadger, but unless it's a real rair variety I wouldn't bother for the sake of a few quid. You run the risk of pest & dsiease problems if you save you own.
