  • Lotty spaces :)

I have to say I've been helping a friend with their lotty space since last year and its been lovely but there is something special about having your own space as well and I was offered a lotty space about a month ago, so now I welcome myself to lotty politics

Its amazing how many people seem to "know" all about you before you even step foot onto your lotty space

Its amazing to me how gardening should be a joy and a release for many and yet there are such blatent attempts from our towns allotment "leaders" to run people rough- shot. Some lotty owners even fear these leaders because if they get on there wrong side they know there will be things to pay for it, even getting run off your lotty space for bogus charges of not upkeeping or being to old to take care of the space etc. I mean if your paying the fee of the lotty space and its obvious you do use it WHY do some lotty leaders treat some who are not living up to some unofficial standard? And these are the same leaders who have SEVERAL lotty spaces when there is a waiting list. (Our area supposedly has a strict no more than 1 lotty space per person rule according ot our council, along with no sheds bigger than an 8'x6' even though there are those who have double that size)

I understand that maybe people werent as big on lotty spaces as they are now but I feel if you've got more than one and there is a list why cant some of the plots be returned to those on the waiting list? There are no trees or permanent plantings just veggies and flower beds- so what is the harm in downsizing those that have excessive spaces?

There is defiently a double standard in the air but I'll do my best to stay out of range and carry on my own space. Gosh how do you all deal with lotty politics, it just seems a bit nutty to me that people seem to have nothing better to do with themselves or is it just me?

Aww thanks Snadger I did have fun before the snow hit around here and dug up a bunch of beetroot that was left langering and some cabbages, theres even purple sprouting broccollii there already. But there is a lot to clean up, weeds, garbage and so on. But at leat I had a couple of water buttes already there and a space for a shed eventually

So waiting for the snow to leave so a proper dig up can be done and laid to rest with black weed covering before plantings in late spring. I've already started some flower seeds indoors for my edgings

I stay WELL out of the politics, I had enough of that in my last job and I'm just there to grow Veg.

I've grown some stuff that the old boys have never heard of, and make an attempt to grow in ways they disagree with...just to prove that there's more than one way to shell a pea...

I smile, say hiya and get on with my own thing.

Well progress; I have my main lotty space all cleared, tilled and raked over. Moved and fixed the compost bins, and rain barrells, even found some covers for them too. Now to lay some black weed sheeting and add some arches for the grapes and climbing flowers soon; I'm SO loving it!

I stayed out of the politics for years and was more than happy to do so. I've recently become involved simply because there was so much back-biting, rumour, innuendo and, frankly, lies being spread around our site that first I was motivated to find out the truth and then I found I quite enjoyed helping the site go forward through what have been quite trying times. I started by attending the AGM and ended up a couple of hours later voted on to the committee, wondering how on earth that had happened. I still don't consider myself a political person and all I really want to do is grow my veg, it's just that sometimes a situation evolves and you find yourself having to try and ensure that things don't get any worse. If you can tend your plot without the politics affecting you, then I'd do just that.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Layed down the black weeding covers, getting some old bits of shelving wood and old tires soon for growing things in- and all for free from a friend of ours; yeah! Immensly enjoying seed sowing (now I think I have the knack of it) and gazing at eth sunshine lately- very satisfying Now to look for a chicken coop ark!

Who cares?! I mean why should you care? If some busy body has nothing better to do than go reporting that you've laid sheeting let them go for it. Just let it go over your head and ignore it. If its not in the rules its fine. Only when it becomes persistant would I consider responding saying you feel you're being singled out. Make sure you keep copies just in case you need it.
