Telegraph Improved Cucumbers

After a couple of years of growing purely Marketmore cucumbers, I have this season changed my routine and branched out to Telegraph Improved.

Obviously with Marketmore I did not have to remove any male flowers, so any hints and tips in this area, such as recognition of flowers and frequency of their removal will be greatly appreciated.

I'd have stuck to mktmore!....Telegraph Imp are a pain in the posterior.

Nonetheless....Flowers easy to tell apart just the same as courgettes....the ones with the fruit behind the flower the good girlies....no small fruit its a bad boy. You need to do it daily and still you'll miss one or two!

I struggled with Telegraph last year. Grew three but all got stem rot and had to be chucked. Going to try Socrates this year, they were reduced to next to nothing in Woollies at the end of last year.

Sounds like I should head out and get some cuc seeds that don't care if they are Arthur or Martha!

Thanks for the advice guys, will maybe try a couple of telegraphs and still grow some Marketmores.

If you are gowing to grow frame cukes, Go for an all female variety...expensive though.

I tried one of the japanese varieties indoor/ outdoor last year.... good crop no mucking about with deflowering...excellent results.

Cukes prefer a more humid atmosphere than Tomatoes. Beware of red spidermite, Best thing for stem rot is to knock/cut out bottom of a pot plant that in larger pot or border and ONLY water the bottom....but be regular to avoid powdery mildew.

Pick Cuecumbers.

what is the best outdoor cuc to grow?I've never grown them before as were not fussed on them but my grandkids live on them!and cost their mom a fortune(get through 2 to3 a week! would prefer all female to save me faffing about removing male flowers...if thats what you have to do.

I like Retsina and Marketmore as ridge (outdoor) cukes. But as I said Jap ones great(forgotten name at the mo) outdoors in a sheltered spot. None of them require deflowering they tend not to be bitter but they are smaller and more prickly skinned than greenhouse (frame) cukes...It is the traditional varieties of frame one that require flower removal.
