  • Oh Lord it's hard to be random........

When you've got a background in engineering and everything has to be in straight lines and at right angles!

Trying to re-adopt the random look of a cottage gardeney type of Ornamental Kitchen Garden (allotment)................. ah la Geoff Hamilton style.

Planted shallots today, but not in rows, in clumps! I had to curb my natural instinct to plant in rows or geometric patterns.
In the end I used the old bulb planting trick...throw them up in the air and plant where they landed.......still moved a few though!

    Never mind.....I'll get there eventually!

Lol Snadger, sounds fab, that sort of planting is right up my street and what I would like for my own. My garden has the sort of cottage garden feel, I'm quite an arty farty person and have to be different lol Post some pics

Haha, you don't have to be an engineer to plant things in straight rows. I had 20 strawberry plants and a triangular planter to fill. I found an extra one to plant so I could have a triangular number. 6,5,4,3,2,1 in each row.

i just chuck flower seeds round, but as i'm short of space the veggies all have to fit in a specific sized patch so not much chance to be random. but the flowers work ok as long as the tall ones aren't at the front

          Lol...

i planted onion sets the other day, they ended up random as the bed was about 8" too wide for me to reach the middle - it was already there by previous tenant - so i ended up just sticking them in where i could reach.

Snadger, applying logic it's incredibly easy to be random.

            Just get drunk!

Only trouble is you might get so random you can't be bothered with those ruddy flowers and "Oi Peter, who-r-u tellin how to plant stuff?"

              Randomness?
My dearest OH sowed some free seeds in her hanging baskets, by opening them all then mixing them up. It was only afterwards she read the height of some of the varieties...
              Anyone for hanging Larkspur?

i can only work to 1/1000th of an inch myself so it's hard to be random on the allotment. straight beds and straight rows but i'm getting there. in my garden allotment i have curves and circles for beds, most satifying.

My OH is a Software Engineer, he does lots of circuit boards and things in tiny detail and they have to be perfect, but put a paintbrush in his hand and he is the epitome of randomness - he drives me crackers! I've had to ban him from painting the new house, he's doing the plumbing instead, to which he is applying the same level of precision as he would a circuit board (NB, he ripped out the plumbers attempt (which we paid for) because it was too messy!!). I ask you....

I think I must be the 'Monk' of the gardening world as my straight lines and patterns are bordering on obsession!

I won't pull a cabbage because it spoils the look of the row!

I will make a huge effort this year though and put trigonometry and geometry out of my mind!

My allotment will look like there's been an explosion at a seed merchants!

lol why fight it Snadger? you know it'll drive you barmy anyway. You'll sit there and work out the velocity at which you threw the onions and plan your next throw accordingly... What's wrong with straight clean lines anyway? ....*holds hand up as a confirmed straight line saddo too *

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Why not just think of it as organised chaos - and sit down and plan the chaos.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
