Oh no, what have I started?

Well, hubby and I have been down the allotment and cleared the worst of the weeds, at least down to soil level. Next week we'll start measuring out beds and forking though to get weeds out. Tired but happy, and now thinking... "is half a plot enough???" Silly really, as there's only two of us and we'll drown in veggies if we had more space!

It's probably a good thing that the other half of the plot is horrendously overgrown, as it will stop me casting sheeps eyes at it.

The only thing that worries me slightly is that there are an awful lot of vacant plots. There doesn't seem to be evidence of vandalism, and there do seem to be one or two plots which have been taken over relatively recently, which is a good sign, I hope. I didn't see anyone down there while we were there to have a chat with (another worrying thing???) - I'm starting to get paranoid!

So, all of those of you who are on waiting lists for plots - move to Chester and help me make the site a thriving place!!

I know what you mean about being excited its great Isn't it!! I signed for mine this morning and have just been back to have a look and the allotment secretary has put a boundary string around it. It looks huge. Thank god I've only got ground level weeds to deal with. Just need to weeds forking up really. Considering hiring a rotavator to deal with the worst.

There are vacant plots on our site aswell and I did think that maybe I should take the one next to me aswell, glad I didn't now I've seen the proper boundary. There are only three of us.
I don't think its anything to worry about not seeing anyone yet. I don't know about where you are but our weather has been awful lately. A few of the plots on our site are still thriving with beans etc so looks like the soil is ok.

Hi HM,

the best way to make it thrive is to do one your self & folks will soon move in. I'd miss not speaking to folks I have to admit, I was talking yesterday to one plot holder who I've never met till yesterday & he's been there for about 30 years!!! but I don't normally get there on a saturday so you'll find that certain folks have certain days that they do. A lot of the folks who are retire tend to have the weekend off ...... can't wait to retire

Know what you mean! Dexter the dog has his "aunty margaret" who lives next door, and basically looks after him all day while I'm at work. I get a bit fed up sometimes when she tells me where they've been for the day! Especially when I'm stuck in the office from 8 - 430pm! DL

Well done HM!! You certainly did well clearing your plot today!! I thought we'd done well on our new plot, but you have us beat hands down!

Loved the piccies, and also know the 'I'm sure I could handle a bigger plot' syndrome, we've not even finished clearing ours fully yet, but already eying up a couple of other plots near ours with envious eyes! lol!!

Today we double dug two four foot wide beds, which was enough. We also met Harold, who came to speak to us, & gave us lots of advice and a pile of veg to take away with us - courgettes, tomatoes, parsnips, and 2 varieties of potato - he recommended Cara & seeing as I'd not eaten them, he went & dug some up for me! He also said Pink Fir Apple grew well on the site, which is good as I fancied giving them a go; he said that they were also called 'Chinese Potatoes' - no idea why!

He said there were no problems with vandalism, which was a relief - apparently the youths are all too lazy to bother!

The soil is good - clayey and rich on top, with a sandy layer underneath so drainage won't be a problem. Can you tell I'm excited? Photos of Harold's kind gifts will appear later on the blog...

I'm glad for you HM. Most folks are sound but you wll come across the odd grouch. Chinese potatoes is new one on me maybe its because they look like Chinese Artichokes - nobbly little gits. Cara Are a nice spud but they don't do well for me but mine is sandy loam so you bit of clay maybe helps.

I won't be retireing just yet Bootie (more's the pity ). Local knowledge is always the best sort of advice every time.
