  • Asparagus pea

    Next question.

I bought a packet of seeds for these; I grew them once, many years ago and liked them. However, after 30+ years I don't remember their growing habits and the packet doesn't say a lot!

It says to plant them 12" apart, so I guess they bush out a bit, but they need some support as they grow, and how tall do they get.

I am feeling my inexperience most at planning where to put what, so I can get the various strips dug and prepared in time to plant, and I don't want to make obvious boo-boos of planting tall shading short unless it's deliberate.

When I grew them about 3 yrs ago- I recall mine were just a bit higher than knee height.
I've got some seeds from Wayne which have germinated - so perhaps we can compare later in the year???

Ha!!!...well I'm really chuffed to finish off 'your' packet.

I really enjoyed them to be honest- but they certainly need daily attention when it come to cropping.
The stringy ones made a lovely flavoured soup once strained.

Do they actually taste like asparagus ?

I grew american landcress last year that was supposed to taste like watercress... It had the charm of a dock leaf !!

I'm told they taste like a cross between asparagus and pea.

I grow lots of landcress (mostly because it self seeds) and I find it tastes like watercress as long as it is grown in moist fertile soil. If it struggles in dry soil then I would accept that it might be like a dock leaf - although I've never tried one!

Unlike any asparagus/pea combo I've ever had.

As I said before - they looked pretty.

I tried them last year and was rather underwhelmed. They certainly look prettier than they taste IMO. I even tried squishing the tiny 'peas' out of their frilly pods and that tasted nicer than eating the pods, but they are so small you would need a field full to get a meal from them !
