  • Digging over mound......spuds underneath?

I have a few beds that need digging over after only recently getting my plot. Most look fairly straightforward, but one bed has 6 mounded rows. I'm guessing it was a spud bed.

If it is spuds, how should I go about digging it over? It hasn't been harvested, whatever it is.

Is it imperative to get every spud out?

I'm planning on putting my carrots there.

When we took over our second lottie last year there was a bed full of spuds left from the year before. This was in May though, and they were all growing again! It was a right tangled mess...! Anyway, yes, you really should try and get all of them out - your row of carrots will be fairly mucked up if a potato plant pops up in the middle of it! Plus, if the potatoes were blighted last year, you might be reintroducing it to your plot sooner than it might get there normally, so best to get rid of them, and into a bonfire or bin rather than the compost heap or they'll just keep growing.

Dig out a corner, carefully - you never know - it could be an asparagus bed

My thought too, asparagus on the brain now - first two spears of the season are almost ready to cut!

What did it turn out to be Cosmo&Dibs? Was it old spuds, or a lovely asparagus bed?

I haven't got to it yet. I spent three hours yesterday planting 30 spuds, and I was shattered by the end of that task!

I'll be on to that bed next week. Will let you know!
