  • Newie - what to grow next?

Hello all, I got my first allotment just after Christmas and am thrilled! It was very overgrown, and parts of it still are!
But I'm working on clearing and making one bed at a time and we seem to be making good progress!
So far we have potatoes, courgettes, a salad bed, shallots, onions, carrots and a couple of rows of cabbages planted.
I have sweetcorn still growing in the greenhouse too.
Question is what else can we grow? We've just cleared a 10 foot by 5 foot patch and made a raised bed, but don't know what to put in it??
We have planted most things that we like to eat already :-)
We need something easy to grow as I'm not particularly green fingered LOL,

    Many thanks x

    Hi and welcome.
How about peas and beans, beetroot and squashes? You could do runner and French type bean, with both sorts you can get dwarf ones which don't need much support or those which will grow to the top of 8ft canes, I grow mine up cane wigwams on my raised beds, if you start them off in pots now they'll be ready to go into the plot as soon as it's warm enough. Peas can go straight into the soil now, some grow tall, others are shorter and need less staking, more twiggy sticks than canes.
How about broccoli, plant now to pick next Feb/April, plants are in garden centres now.
You could also buy some rhubarb plants which will keep going and need little attention.
Hope this helps, there's lots of other things when you feel a bit more adventurous.

      No pumpkins?

It's a good time to start them off in pots now.

I grow French Beans to use as dried kidney beans over winter.

        What to grow.

Hello Claire. I realise the main purpose of your lottie is food but how about growing some sweet peas? There is nothing quite like picking your days veg and before you leave the allotment taking with you an bunch of sweetpeas for yourself or a neighbour
As for veg, fennel is very tasty and leeks will see you through winter.
        Good digging to you.

i agree about runner beans. they always grow so well along with the green/french beans. if you like courgettes then try different types. we all love the yellow ones. and we grow rainbow radishes and carrots which look fab.

That's what I would suggest as well bobbin. I always grow a few sweet peas, they look lovely, marigolds as well, for the beneficial insects etc. I wouldn't be without some chard in my veg patch,so versatile and looks beautiful.

hi Claire, Ive turned one bed over to flowers for the house. hopefully we will have fresh flowers all summer. just plant a few each week and that space will soon get filled up. there are quite a few edible flowers as well so thats a bonus. i know some people will disagree but its your plot and you can plant what you like as long as its legal!
