  • Allotment Clearing

Phoned the council today about them clearing/rotavating my second plot, they reckon it should take about six weeks. So if i dig the first at the rate i'm going they should both be done at the same time. Has anyone had the council clear their plot and if so is it any good.

Were just about to we have cut down all the overhanging branches pulled up a ton of brambles and burnt loads of stuff no couch grass that we have been able to see whilst doing a bit of digging so we have asked council to come in and do the business, they are going to plough it rather than rotovate it though. I think it is the nasty perenniel weeds you have to look out for because if you have them all the rotovator will do is chop them up and make more friends for the ones already there Our council are very kindly doing ours for free hope yours is too.

Just realised, its you Bex you got the other plot woohooo way to go, now for the graft but isnt it great, I still amaze myself that I am so enthused by all this of course my lovely sisters fall over laughing now when I speak to them because its always something about the allotments, my eldest sister (who resides in Oz, and was feeling a bit down being so far away) says the news of me keeping chickens has really cheered her up and if she is feeling down all she has to do is picture me in a chook pen and she laughs out loud Im obvously no felicity kendal!

        Hi Balliol
The council are spraying with weedkiller first so hopefully they will all be dead by the time they rotivate and yes they are doing it for nothing as I am a new tenant.
At the moment the lottie is all I can think about, the planning of what and where is really exciting, just hope the things I am choosing grow.
Think I need a social life.

Our council are not too helpful in that area. I know one person who had help but she is registered disabled. Other people who have asked have either been turned down or ended up waiting so long they just go ahead and dig it over anyway.

Good thing they are spraying first. That's quite thoughtful really.

How do you get the council to do these things for you. Maybe I could get them to come and do a bit of my garden for me.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Where do you get anyone to do that?

Down here in deepest Suffolk it's do it yourself big time. The council don't even apologise for the state of the plot, just expect you to be grateful you've got one. Mine hadn't been worked for ages and was full of shoulder high brambles, plus nettles, docks and bindweed.

Got some decent crops this year, but around half of it is still under carpet. Hoping to get some time off work with decent weather so I can get it all productive next year.

The council say they will clear it but it hasn't happened yet, it could just be a load of hot air to get me to take the plot, we have empty ones in the area.

We will see if anything actually happens.

Users is owned by the members so we employ a steward who decives what needs doning then he and his gang of thugs press gang unweary plot holders,
using sutle ploys. "Have you got a chain saw", "what are you doning down at teh canteen" If you are not fully on the ball you are in the chain-gang that is the working party.
