Water Butts .....

Not sure if this is the right section to post this or not?

I was wondering if anybody could help advice me, i am after some water butts i have contacted southwest water as they used to sell them - but they said they dont any more and the company that is now selling them are quite expensive (well the same price as b&q about £70 each.

I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that you can buy water butts cheap / at a reasonable price?

Also i see some people have large blue drums that they convert into water butts and just add the taps (where do they get them from)?

Have been looking in my local paper but they all seem to be snapped up really quick -so keep missing out.

Any advice / info would be greatly appreciated.

Wilkinsons have butts at reasonable prices with taps for about £15 or £20 depending on size.

There are folk on ebay selling the food drums (the blue containers) pretty cheap. Postage can be high but you might find someone local whom you can collect from.

I found a guy ten miles away who was happy for me to collect 5 200l drums at £5 each (he actually gave me the 5 for £20 when I got there). I got 3 of them for a neighbour and 1 is in the garden (our down pipes are hidden so it's attached to some guttering I put on the fence). The other is in the garage at the moment.

Depending on the size you're after B&Q sell a 135lt butt for £19.99 (got one a couple of weeks ago), they also have a 210lt for £29.99. I have one of the blue drums you mention, to which I've fitted the tap and it works perfectly. Mine came from builders, and I've one for DS's school which came from a local farmer. I also have two white drums (same size as blue) which have also come from farms. Its great - they were all free.

Try googleing Smiths of the Forest Of Dean they are well known for selling recycled drums. I collected mine as I am local but they did me 2x400l and 2x120l for £38 pounds. I know they deliver but I am not sure of the cost.

Have you got any factories or similar in the area that use them ? have a scout round a trading estate as sometimes you can find them outside and ask if you can have them. Thats what we do around here.

I'm lucky as high likelihood of getting a few from my hubbys factory, the big blue ones, very strong plastic. can use for potatoes if really clean too.

Wickes do a 200l one for £21.52 but you can't buy it online, in-store only.

I'm on the look out for a reasonable priced water butt too so if anyone can find a 200 odd litre one cheaper (and in stock - no joy from Wilkinsons) I'd be very interested too!
