  • Plastic yogurt pots on sticks!

    Hiya

This may seem a silly question but I have noticed on my allotment some of the neighbours have loads of sticks in the group with plastic pots of top of them.

Can you let me know what this is for? does it work? should i join the yogurt pot gang?

    Cheers

One very good reason is that if you fall you can't poke your eye out. That is obviously for shorter cane sticks. I use empty mineral water bottles. The other reason will be that they make a noise when the wind blows and supposedly should scare the birds off.

If they've got straw stuffed inside the pots, it could be for encouraging earwigs to make a home there - as opposed to in beloved plants.

I think they are used to scare away birds cos of the noise they make and to trap slugs/snails and other insects. I like peace and quiet on my plot so wizzing music tapes and clanking pots and bottles are a no-no for me. MInd you the clanking of the pots can sound a bit like yachts moored at the sea-side!

I also use mine to support netting when I need it. I use mineral water bottles, as the yogurt pots just went for a airborne ride!

I use nice bottle tops with a bit of blu-tack inside to prevent eye poking out. This year my tomato canes had those little red plastic hats that you get on a certain brand of tequila. Shocking how many Margaritas we get through here at Fox Hill Towers.

I use plastic drinking cups on canes for holding up netting same as Jennie.
The netting I use (reclaimed hockey nets) fits over the cup but can't slide down it because of the taper, making it very easy to get the net taught. As has been pointed out, it helps to stop you poking your eyes out on the canes as well.
Mr Kipling makes exceedingly good cakes which I like to munch at my lottie. The tinfoil that these come in is ideal for moulding on the end of any wayward cane in the garden as a further deterrant to loosing an eye

I use old tennis balls on the end of my canes. Get the usual remarks that I am growing tennis balls for Wimbledon

Thats a good idea bootie - they wouldn't blow away like the yogurt pots and they wouldn't rattle like the bottles.

Thats a good idea - if I could only get Dexter to bring his back to me when I throw them! Not sure who has trained who.....methinks he has trained me to retrieve them for him! DDL
