Hi all, new here, and taking the plunge and getting stuck in, despite not really having much experience growing.

When we moved into my new home the landlord delivered some topsoil, and I saw dried couch grass roots in it, and thought my plans for a weed free veg garden were spoiled, but the grasses that appeared were all annuals, and easy to manage.

Also seen suggestions of leaving them for some time in a bucket of water, as this will definately kill and rot them.

The only place for bindweed is the skip! I have been battling this in my garden for years and have just about sorted it. Then I had some workmen get rid of an old shed and lay a base for my new greenhouse. Under the shed were bindweed roots. The soil they dug out to put down the hardcore was thrown on my garden and I have spent many days sieving the bits of roots out! Talk about back ache! But sooner that than the dreaded stuff making a comeback.

It was windy at our allotments today and on one plot there is a black plastic sheet which has been down for six months to kill the weeds. It blew away today and the surface of the soil underneath is like a roadmap of couch grass and bindweed roots all perfectly healthy.
I've just watched War of the Worlds and it was reminicent of the weed that was covering everything on the film!
Amazing stuff! I am sure that if a meteor hit the world and killed every animal and plant, their would be three survivors, couch grass bindweed and mares tail!

                So.

As a complete newbie, I also was told that dropping them in water and letting the suckers drown and rot for a couple of months not only made them inert, but made the water nutritious (not that I'm gonna drink it).

                Thoughts from the panel please?

I've used it on my old plot to cover the weeds before I dug it over.I've just posted on the thread about weed suppressing membrane.
