  • Balance sheet and growing list 2009

The last few years we've posted a balance sheet for the year, which seemed fairly popular, so as its now becoming a tradition, here's the start of this years Balance sheet thread! I have spent a fair bit on bagged compost. I must have spent £50 on bag after bag when I was potting on all of my crops before they were ready to go outside. I have probably spent £10 on seeds. So far my harvests have been a daily 'bag' of lettuce leaves and a few radishes. I am looking forward to weighing all the tom, courgettes, beans etc to calculate how well the season goes.

I've only just seen this thread and would like to tell you what my expenditure for this year is. Are you ready for this??????????????? Over £8000.00! Yes - that's eight thousand. I moved here 10 months ago and have had what was a 100x30 ft wilderness landscaped with raised beds, concrete slabs, greenhouse, gravel etc. How long is it going to take me to get that back in veggies?

For the last couple of years I have tried to do a balance sheet and for the first month or so it goes well then I spend so much time planting and harvesting that I don't have time to do the weighing and costings. Also how do you cost surplus that you give away.

Can I recommend growing copious amounts of cocoa, methinks that is going to be the only way to recoup that!

                  I never do a balance sheet - it's not why I grow.
I get lots of veggies and we always have something from the garden - that's why I grow. Sometimes I have a bit too much and have to freeze the surplus. Grrrr!
We like your list Mrs D and are sincerely impressed with what you produce - but what do you do with it all. I love my veggies but I don't think I could get through that lot.

Lol! What do we do with it all? Eat it of course!! Lol

Actually, some goes to friends n family, lots we eat fresh, some gets dried, some gets frozen, lots gets processed into tomato ketchup, tomato puree, passatta, pasta sauces etc, lots of soups made to freeze, lots of smoothies (with the fruit), virtually nothing goes to waste and we become virtually self sufficient for veg for the year, which is one of the reasons for our growing so much (tho not the main one, fun, taste, satisfaction and seasonal organic crops with minimal food miles and maximum freshness are more important to us both!)

So, once more onto the balance sheet!

I agree with HW's comments above. This year I thought we might do better than last, but our spuds seem to have failed miserably. Oh well, c'est la vie. We'll enjoy what we can in the meantime (as always, even though I am not a great fan of the brassica family and that seems to be the thing I grow best)....

Last year we didnt do particularly well with our spuds, the soft fruit wasnt as much as we'd expected, most of the carrots got root fly, the chillies didnt do as well as the year before, the peppers didnt do particularly well, nor did the aubergines, the brassica beds werent weeded sufficiently and we lost produce in them, but despite all of that it was a good year.

This year we've only got about 25 parsnips growing (out of 50+ planted), the swedes have been massacred, the carrots went in late, as did the borlottis and the kentucky beans, 2 of the 3 batches of sweetcorn are majorly behind, the leeks have just gone in and gotten nibbled, so its not all rosy in the veg patch here either!

But we've plenty of things growing, and as long as we dont go hngry AND enjoy both the time on the plot and eating what we've grown, then as always it will have been worthwhile!

                            1 days harvest!

This is what Lee fetched home from the plot the other day, just 1 days harvest!! Another 4lb of rasps, another 6lb of broad beans, 1lb tomatoes, another 1 lb of french beans, another bunch of spring onions, another large iceberg lettuce, another 1/2lb of peas, 2 large caulies, several spears of PSB and 1 large head of broccolli plus 25 more courgettes, of between 1 and 3lb each!

Just about ready to harvest now on the plot are the overwintering garlic, the first batch of overwintering onions (about 100 onions) which will be taken once the allotment judging has finished (this week), the second early spuds, more broccolli, more caulies, more cabbages, more toms, the first of the peppers, more broad beans and french beans, more radish and spring onions, lots more raspberries, more strawberries and of course, lots more courgettes!!
