  • Just a simple question

    Hi Grapes

I have eventually got round to putting my name down on the local waiting list for an allotment...
My question is as i have only a very small area at home to GYO i am allways pottering about thinking of different ideas of what i can plant or sow next or erecting some device or something..
How often do you grapes go to your allotments because if i went as often to the allotment as i spend on my little patch at home there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to spend there... LOL
    Cheers .... John

At this time of year I go everyday day. I walk to school drop of the children and carry on with my toddler to the plot. I get about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours before she wants to go home, but by then it's too hot to do much more anyway.

A lot of my fellow polt holders go every other day but spend longer working than me so I guess it all ends up about the same amount of time. About 16 - 20hrs a week

Depends on what else I have to do, I dont really work ( only one night a week ) so I can go whenever I like. Weather permitting I spend as much time as I can cos its my little piece of heaven, so quite, not like at home where next doors dog bark at fresh air. I love it at my lottie and even if there isnt much to do I just sit and ponder.

        Hi John

It is a simple question, but there are many different answers.

Have a gander through the Allotment Advice section, there's a few threads asking the same recently, should give you some idea.

I don't think there is a 'typical' allotmenteer! I go every day after work to sort my chooks. As I arrive, usually my allotment neighbours who are retired , are leaving. Some visit regularily in the summer but hardly at all in the winter. Some are there at the crack of dawn but are gone by lunchtime. Some are just arriving as I am leaving at 7.00 pm.
Even at weekends whet the allotments are the busiest everyone seems to be coming and going at differing times.
No one would haul you over the coals for spending all your daylight hours there (apart from OH!)
One guy was even using his shed as a bolt hole for when he fell out with the missus and was seen going home at 6.00 am!

I've got half a plot, and at the moment I'm probably spending a couple of hours at the weekend, and then half an hour to an hour twice a week in the evening. I've not got the tidiest plot, but I don't have the messiest one either, and most of the evening visits are focussed on watering.

I have stuff at home as well as two plots. I go up the plot about 3 evenings a week and Saturday morning...then I grow stuff on at home.
