  • I've 'made' a new variety of tomato - please help!!!

    Hello everybody!

A few years ago I started to 'splice' tomato plants together and ended up with a brilliant new variety which I have grown as it is for about 6 years now.

It is sort of a cross between a cherry tomato and a plum tomato - pinkish in colour with a brilliant point at the bottom. The plants seem to want to be bush types and get masses of fruit on them.

Can anyone help with how I go about getting the seeds made into a recognised commercial variety?

    Thankyou!!

    Pam

      Well done Marketstalls,

I have enclosed a link which will hopefully provide you with all the assistance you need but it is an expensive process to carry out and to upkeep. This is why commercial seed lists get smaller and varieties that do not sell 'well' are lost....but good luck if you want to try!

Years ago I spliced a tomato plant to a potato just to see if I could do it!

Corrrect me if I am wrong though, but if you splice a tomato on to a rootstock will the seed gathered from it not just be the same as if you hadn't spliced it?

Evidently not if yours is different, but just wondered how you did it?

            Hi Marketstalls,

You cannot create a new variety by splicing two tomato varieties together because the genes don't mix. You can only do this by cross-pollination or genetic modification.

Hello everyone and thankyou for your welcomes and advice.

I should have known better than to post half an explanation! Yes - I cross-pollinated about 5 varieties during my very non-scientific experiment. I used a paintbrush and was greatly assisted by lots of bees who were sharing the greenhouse. I also spliced seveal combinations of plants together. After a couple of years of this pretty random approach, I grew loads of plants and then only kept the seeds from these pretty plum/cherry/pink ones and only grew them from then on.

(I really dont know the science of all this - I just like growing tomatoes) Anyway the resulting plant has been consistent for 5 years now and it really is lovely.

I do have some photos - I'll try and load them up later today to see what you think.

              Pam

The first Bramley tree grew from pips planted by a young girl, Mary Ann Brailsford, in her garden in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, circa 1809.
The original tree still bears fruit today
A local butcher, Matthew Bramley, bought the cottage and garden in 1846 and it was while he lived there in 1856 that a local nurseryman, Henry Merryweather, asked if he could take graftings from the tree and start to sell the apple.
Bramley agreed, provided he called the apple 'Bramley seedling'.

Will 'Pam' be a household name in tomatoes for the future then?????

                Good luck!!

hahahhahaha - lovely story! Its bound to end up being something inappropriate like 'Pammy's Plums' or something.

If I get anywhere with all this and the scary DEFRA people maybe I'll ask the Grapevine folks to think of a name for me.

                  Thanks for the encouragement Snadger.

                          How to post a piccie!

Depends whether you have the pictures stored somewhere on the net, or whether they are in your harddrive.

If stored on the net then there are 2 ways of posting them, Firstly click on the IMG Icon in the toolbar when posting a reply, then enter the pictures location into the pop up screen, or secondly add a little bit of html to your post as follows (I've spaced it out so that it shows up on the post, otherwise the forum will think its html telling it to load in a picture!)
                          < i m g s r c = "your image location in here" border = "0" alt = "" / > < br / >

All you need to do is remove the extra spacing and change the name between the "" tags to the location of your picture, and that should put up your image.

If they are stored on your harddisk, then all you need to do is click on the attachment icon, then search for the picture you want and double click on it, then when you have it selected, click on the upload button and when its uploaded, close the window, it will then be posted as an attachment.

I hope thats of some help, and not too difficult to follow!
