  • Green Manure

    Hi,
I read about how useful green manure can be and bought a pack of seeds from T&M. I also read that fenugreek can also be sown as a green manure. Can I just buy this from an asian store and sow in autumn?

I had some manure contamination this year on 3 of my beds (potato, brassicas and beans - runner and climbing french). Will it help or not using green manure on these beds.

I also read that brassicas should not be grown where potatoes were grown the previous year. If I grown green manure and dig into the potatoe bed will that enable me to use the potato bed for brassicas (again I have read that brassicas are not much affected by contamination, so potato or beans bed is the best to grow these for next year)

Just trying to workout what's the best way to plant next year to tackle the contaminated beds and want to out as much goodness as I can into these beds. Thanks for any help you can provide.
    cheers Reks

Potatoes like an acidic soil, brassicas need an alkaline soil. You could add lime or chicken manure to make it right

Which green manure seeds did you buy from T&M and on which page in the catalogue will I find them? I've got a fuchia plant that has its seed pods turning grey now and I'm going to plant them in a few places because they are supposed to be great for green manure seeing as they are members of the pea family and will produce nitrogen nodules.

Hmmm. Very interesting. Thanks for that Reks.

I have a T&M catalogue and £20 of vouchers, but I'm led to believe that the vouchers are only redeemable when using the catalogue but not online. I can't find any green manure in the catalogue though.

You do get quite a bit of seed for four quid like, but I was wondering if maybe wild bird seed would do the job just as well. I can buy about four kilo's of the stuff for under two quid and it includes plants like Rye grass and Sunflower seeds. I'm sure they'd be fine if I dug them back into the earth after a couple of months of growth.

Yes, you can just buy fenugreek in an asian store. I put the seeds in water overnight then planted them, pretty good germination
