      I am sad

I am turning into a sad type of person someone down the allotment said I could dig through his compost etc, I harvested about 20 big worms for my polytunnel and was smiling.

Different types of worm perform different functions. Brandlings/Zebra's or muck worms break down the debris in the compost heap but won't necessarily 'do the business' in the garden. Surface casting worms are in the very surface and as the name implies 'surface cast' the very topsoil and make it friable. Other worms live deeper and aerate the soil deeper down.

There are probably other types as well, so some of the worms you collect could just die for lack of food or curl up into a ball and wait til the soil warms up a bit! Hopefully some of the ones you've collected will be the type to help your soil

As an aside, and related to this post, I see it mentioned about overwintering chooks in a polytunnel, how come they don't peck holes in it out of interest?
