Fleece is much cheaper than enviromesh. I made a barrier using fleece 24" high stapled to stakes. When carrots are all pulled I can roll it up and store it to use round next years carrot bed.

I'm sure i read somewhere that someone was planning on using net curtains.
Sorry I can't be more specific.

Voile is good and could posibly be picked up cheaply from car boot sales or eBay.
I have 'enviromesh but not enviromesh' which I got from the local Garden centre, simply their own brand of the stuff. Still reasonably expensive but not as dear as the named brand.

I find that fleece doesn't last 10 mins in the wind.
Voile net curtains are the way to go. You might need to sew a few together, if you can't buy off the bolt. It's roughly £2 a metre.
I use debris netting now ... about 73p a metre. A few determined flies will get through the larger holes, so you might want to weld them closed with a flame

I have debris netting around the sides of my carrot bed but would have thought that if i used it over the top it would 'draw' the carrots because of it's shading effect?

I haven't noticed any shading effect, Snadge. The plants are all growing normally under the net (as are the weeds).
My carrots are the best they've ever been (admittedly there is still a little maggot damage)
i bought some enviromesh a couple of years ago, and though it does keep a lot of nasties out, i still seem to get quite a lot of whitefly in there.
never seen net at the pound shop, is it a nationwide pound shop dynamo?

I'm sorry I don't know. I'm not even sure of its exact name, though next time I'm near it I will check it. there's a couple of local pound shops though and they both usually have some interesting and useful gardening items whenever I look in there.
