sweetcorn drowning

took a trip to the lottie between the rain and hail yesterday, my plot looked ok but a poor plotter about 4 up well ........... his sweetcorn was standing in what looked like a medium sized duck pond!!!!!hes a newbie as well and i could only feel his disappointment. guess noone told him that that plot has a habit of floodingi really feel people should be warned of these things when taking on a plot, they pay there money and expect a half decent piece of land to cultivate i expect the water will drain away pretty soon but the poor guy will wonder why his corn is failing, think i will have a word when i see him so he can at least avoid that part of the plot or turn it into a bog garden

We've put raised beds in to counter the flood tendancies in our garden. It seems to work really well.

My plots are at the bottom of hills that converge from North, South and West, so my middle plot after any sort of rain used to be under 4-6" of water. I therefore decided that this would be the plot to place the shed and greenhouses, along with the fruit cage and even for the soft fruit I made raised beds.

The next plot Eastwards I have put the fruit trees and tyre towers, so the trees get plenty of water. The other plot has raised beds for veg but when I was digging these, I came across Victorian land drains. I cleared the silt out of them and as I have broken up the clay soil in the beds, now I don't get flooding on any of my plots.

That is not good...if it floods all his root crops will rot....every time it rains.

The plot down from mine had the same problem two years ago, but the plotholder has since made raised beds and no problem since. Mind you if we get really torrential rain everyone can expect puddles. As long as they drain reasonably quickly it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
