  • Long Shot ? Rotovator help

Ok so I know this is a long shot
I have acquired a mowerland tiller 3.5hp (sold by wickes manafactured by g j handy : briggs engine ) it just needs a new belt.
I contacted the manafacturer and was told it was a certain price plus £3.50 postage ( which i personally think is extortionate to post what is effectively a rubber band !! )
I asked them if they could give me the belt no. so I could buy one from a repair shop close to home and they said "No why should we do that"
( customer service being something unheard of apparently )
I am now at a stalemate as I point blank refuse to pay £3.50 postage especially after they were so rude. I cannot buy one nearby without the belt no.
Does any grape have one they can let me know the number ?
    Heres hoping ;-)

If you have the old belt take along to your local Agricultural merchand /engineer and they will measure the old one and match it up and walla you will have a new one probably better quality than the original.
I got one for my old rotavator from a Bearing specialist that sells belts as well got a super dooper Mitsibishi one a good one as well....jacob

Run a piece of string around the pulleys to determine the length - do it once with the adjustment set at minimum and again set at max.

Measure the width of the pulleys - are they multi-grooved or just one V groove?

Measure the depth of the pulleys.

Take this info to a transmission shop -or whatever you have locally - and they will be able to match it.

Most places will let you return a belt to exchange if it is wrong.

        I've done it!!!!!!

I'm very suprised the manufacturer wouldn't give you the part number. Maybe they are the only supplier? Have you been to wickes to see if they have one on display and you could have a close inspection?

However, think about the cost of all that shopping around. Personally I'd just grit my teeth and pay the £3.50 postage and get on with it.

For the amount of assing around it going to take.....I would pay the £3.50.

Have you got a part number for the tiller itself?

£3 . 50 isn't so bad for postage nowadays; just pay it. it'll save no end of messing about, especially as you don't have the old one or a part number

Once you've got it, you will know what it looks like, and the invoice or delivery note should give you the part number. Then in future you can go along to your local agricultural merchant, motor factor, engineering suppliers, bearing and transmission supplier, etc, and ask them to match it. It is most unlikely that the manufacturers of the tiller/rotovator will have had something made especially; they will have bought something off the shelf from that sort of supplier in the first place
