  • help! tomato blight

I've been growing tomatoes for 6 years in the back garden,
last year we got a greenhouse so we could grow more varieties and we thought that if we could control the amount of water on the leaves it would help with blight as we had it last year.
    Well its back!
we sprayed copper fungicide with reluctance, this didn't help and we only watered at the base but we've had to cut them down and throw them, and the bumper crop that had turned brown.
Now, it's probably my fault as i grew potatoes in 2007 and 2008 and thats where the blight started, But how do i prevent this dissapointment from happening next year,
    thanks
    harry

    I don't think you can.
People will say to use Bordeaux mixture, but that doesn't seem to help either.

What you need to do is get your tomatoes to fruit before the blight comes - and it comes every year without fail. Even if they don't turn red, you can make green tomato chutney.

Me ... I don't grow outdoor toms any more, just a few Sungold on the patio. When they're gone, they're gone.

We've made the same decision - our wet summers just aren't suited to growing toms outside. So, it will be a few in the greenhouse and be done with it.

I'm going to try Black Krim outdoors next year as it's astonishingly early for a beefsteak.... beat a friend of mines gardeners delight to ripe fruit outdoors this year and nearly did it in the GH for me too, only lost by a few days. Next year it will be San Marzano, gardeners delight and Costanuto Fiorentina (hope I've got that right) in the GH and the BK outdoors.... not going to bother with outdoor italians next year..... neiother the Roma or the San Marzano had myuch on them when I had to cut them down for blight..... luckily doesn't seem to have spread to my spuds though PFA and Desiree 9my main types) aren't bad for old fashioned breeds.....

My greenhouse overflow are hanging in there, but a long way off ripe. It was either grow them outside or throw them away.

I have had succes by spraying with Dithane - both in greenhouse and outside. My Moneymakers are now at 6 trusses, lovely red fruits and thats even afer the telltale brown patch appeared on one stem - but didnt after spraying trandsfer to any of the other tomato plants. My neighbour on the allotment has done the same, and saved all his crop

When does blight go away - is it self-limiting each year?

thanks for the advice all. looks like i'll just have to persist with trying to get them going early. we had some great crops the first few years, we were giving them away it's just a shame, guess i'll be spraying next year.
