  • New allotment?

Like Lavender, I have just received a phonecall to say there is an allotment available if I want it. I haven't been to see it yet - but it is on my nearest site which has just 10 plots so I am really lucky to have the chance to have a place there.

Having two young children (and an OH that is not too interested), I am a bit worried about whether I will have enough time to spend there. For me, the biggest advantage is that my garden is small so there is no chance that I could have a polytunnel here - but can you have polytunnels on allotments?

Hi leoblackcat. You will need to check the ruleS with your site as each is different. There are lots of threads on the vine to help you get started when you get there. Good luck! Make sure you ask lots of questions. You don't ideally want a plot for instance that floods all the time.

An hour every evening or early morning is prob going to be more practical to you than a whole weekend. Leave OH with the kids for some "me" time of your own, down at the plot

How far away is the site - walking distance? As TwoSheds says OH can look after the children in the evenings, and possibly for some of the weekend.

Congratulations! I also have young children, and am worried about the amount of time I can spend on my allotment, but I'm looking forward to getting some quiet afternoons down there on my own!

I'm sure my kids will love it once it's all "up & running" and they have their own little section for making mud pies in , but at the moment it's just a big patch of jaggy nettles to them!

Good luck with your new allotment!

yes rustylady, the lottie site is near enough to walk. It is the best possible place to have a lottie for me. I was really lucky to get a place so quick, put my name down in November and thought it would take ages as there are 10 plots and I was 9th on the waiting list.

My daughter enjoys planting things and picking them so as long as I can keep her amusing with things like that whilst she is there she will be happy. Not so sure about my son, as he will just want to kick his ball around and that may not go down too well with the other plotholders!

Good Luck to you too Lavender!
