Hello everyone, could do with a little advice. Just got my hands on a rather overgrown allotment and after hours of clearing found it has a well, unfortunately it's just a hole in the ground with rather a large drop and no water. Everyone on site keeps telling me to fill it with the rubbish I find and leave it but I'm worried I'll end up in trouble. No one mentioned it when I was shown around and as I have children, the thought of leaving it open scares me to death. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Both lotties next to mine have wells, and I hate them - so dangerous. Nothing to stop anything falling down. I'd go with the advice given and find something hard and wide to cover it when you aren't throwing stuff down there.
There's enough water in 2 water butts that get filled in the winter to last us all summer; and we aren't far apart.
Alternatively, ask the council to fill it or block it off [H&S].

could you not put some fencing around it? Like chicken wire with something on top, so that the sharp edges of the wire is not exposed?
Having a very young child who is just starting to try and crawl I understand your feelings!!
TaraThe loud wind never reached the ship,
Yet now the ship moved on !
Beneath the lightning and the Moon
The dead men gave a groan.
They groaned, they stirred, they all uprose,
Nor spake, nor moved their eyes ;
It had been strange, even in a dream,
To have seen those dead men rise.

Thanks Ladies. Glad i'm not the only one who detests these things.
We've got an old gate over it at the moment and I've managed to acquire a piece of heavy metal that i'm going to fix over the top.
Luckily it's up a corner so just going to use it as my rubbish corner and try not to look at it. Ohh err it makes me feel all funny just thinking about it lol.
