  • It stinks!

I have just got 60 sacks of horse manure.

When I read use well rotted manure, how do I know the manure is well rotted?

I just have a great stinking pile at the moment

When will I be able to use it????

    Thanks in anticipation.

When it stops stinking?! Seriously I think it is when it looks like compost and not like poo! Well composted stuff doesn't smell bad - just 'earthy' rather than um stinky.

Exactly Comfreyfan. When it no longer smells of poo it is good to use. Using it still as poo could damage your plants.

Leave it in the sacks as it will rot down quicker!

eek - I made a pile of it. My mate needed the sacks back. Have I made a big gardening error??

If I have made a boob, how long do I wait now?????

I have placed it well away from my shed where I have my cuppa

Cover it with a sheet so it gets nice and warm and it'll be rotten before you know it!

Put a tarpaulin over it and weigh it down with bricks. It'll get nice and hot. You could even put a layer of compost on top and use it as a hotbed with a cloche for overwintering.

Wow - the info I get from here is great - I will cover it and wait.

                    Again, thanks for the help.
