  • Visiting Potential Allotment Site

I'm lucky enough to be on the waiting list for an allotment at a site that's very close to my house, I'm about no. 19 so I'm really hoping to get one next year as the council are halving all full size plots that become available to try and fulfil demand.

Would it be considered bad etiquette/rude/trespassing(!) to have a wander down to the site to see if I can have a look around and chat with any current plot holders that might be there?

I've tried calling the relevant person at the council to check but they're not around at the moment.

The site I'm on have an 'Open Gate' policy on a Sunday morning when anyone can go in have a cup of tea and a chat. Do they not do something like this? I'd have a wander down and if the gates are open see if you can attract someones attention. Ask for the site secretaries number from a current plotholder to arrange a proper viewing.

Good plan Becky! We'll have a wander down this afternoon as we're both off today and see if they are open!

I don't know if they've got a day or time when they have an 'open gate' policy as I've only driven past before and only spotted the actual gate a few days ago when OH was in the passenger seat so could have a proper look out the window for it!

Before I got my allotment, I walked down through the site at least once a week. I was growing veg in a couple of the flower borders at the time, so it was easy enough to have a chat with folks on the way past. Eventually the allotment secretary took notice of my constant presence and asked if I was on the waiting list. I said I was and we talked for a bit. The next time I went down, she called me over and said they were trying to sort out the waiting list a bit, because some of the contact details were out of date etc. She made sure that she had my address and all phone numbers, plus email address. Come winter, when the plots were allocated, I was 4th on the list! and was offered a plot...
