Like most things that we can do to scare the birdies - especially pigeons, geese and crows / rooks - from our crops, they can only be temporary measures at best as the birds soon become accustomed to their presence / rattling / banging or whatever.
The only surefire way is to shoot the beggars - then they can't come back . Sorry if this all sounds familiar to you but I do enjoy my shooting - both for the pot and for vermin control

I'm with you on the shooting Rat, we both have .22 rifles, and were members of the local Rifle Club, but not allowed on our plot, unfortunately!

Do scarecrows work, or do the birds just get used to them as with all else. Think I might make one anyway - just for the atmoshphere . Yes, we could have a wee competition for the children Nicos. Since it's your idea you could put it up as a thread and see who's interested.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

We are having a Virtual Vegetable Show this summer on the Grapevine and I am including two classes for children one of which will be a scarecrow class.

                          Hi LJ

Can I ask if the GYO team have sorted all the classes out yet and when you think we'll get to know what they are?

I just ask because, most of us will soon be thinking about sowing 'stuff' and it would be handy to know what 'stuff' to sow?

                          No pressure of course!!!

                              Hi,
I made a scarecrow in the summer with my daughter and her friend. We used two broom handles and joined them together. We purchased all of his clothes from the local charity shop. Stuffed him with straw. We only made his top half this saved on clothes and straw! Attached a photo with him on. Can make him out i think.
                              Happy making.
This year i am arranging a small competition for the local children. The scarecrows will go on display in our small orchard and everyone can come and visit. Will post some pics when it takes place.
Looking forward to the virtual 'crow show.
