  • Chickens, Ducks and Veg Patches

    Bear with me on this...

We have an 'allotment' at home, plus a large chicken and duck run...

This year, due to one thing and the other (mostly polytunnel related) we've not got much overwintering in the veg patch, and it's very weedy.

Because of the wet summer, the birds' run hasn't had much of a chance to recover ready for winter.

Mr OWG and I were thinking that we could rig up some extra fencing and let the birds have the run of the veg patch over winter.

    Whadda'ya think?

There is nothing for them to 'wreck' in the patch, and I'm assuming that the ground would be fine after a good scratch etc?

I say 'go for it', good for the veg patch - gets rid of pests & weeds and adds a bit of manure, good for the birds - they get fresh ground, greens and a new source of protein The only thing I'd feel sorry for there is the earthworms!

Sounds good to me. Don't forget though, that they are creatures of habit. Mine would keep getting in there next year too!

We're very well fenced, cos of the dogs!

We'd have to make a little gate for the birds to get into the allotment anyway, as their run is completely fenced and roofed...

Could be a good way of getting the patch weeded every year!!
