Holiday sowings????

In this neck of the woods its traditional to sow your show oinions on Christmas day and your show leeks on New years day.

I kinda think its a ploy to avoid the washing up,..................... but who am I to judge!

Anyone else sowing stuff over the hols, and if so what?

I've got some Robinson's Mammoth Red Onions that I'll be sowing at some point before New Year, and some Long Red onions that I might start too. Plus a handful of chillis - I want a longer season on them this year after the kittens trashed them all last year...

I plan to sow my garlic on the shortest day ready for harvest on the longest day and I have some onions that also need to go in providing the ground warms up a bit and I can actually get the fork in

I'll be starting onions & leeks in the propagator, then putting them on a cool but light windowsill (they rotted last year on the north windowsill, so I'll have to make do with 3 half-trays on the south window)

I try and sow a little something every week of the year apart from November; and even then I still sowed broadies.

So yes, all the above plus peas.

i didnt realise i could sow peas as early as late december/early january! do i need to put the seeds in the heated propogator or will the unheated GH do does anyone know?

re: peas/beans, you might need a propagator to get them going (or chit them on kitchen towel in a cool room) but then they should be OK in an unheated GH or maybe fleece cloches....

I'll be starting off a lot of various onions in the next couple of weeks or so plus maybe some broadies and peas, then once I'm through the onions it'll be a few Black Krim tomatoes as an early experiment plus a bunch of hardy veg just to get them going in modules, they go out in March by which time the chillis and peppers should be coming through the propagators along with the the tomatoes and aubergines, then the outdoor cucurbits, non-hardy beans and sweetcorn.....

I'll be starting chillies indoors, and might get tempted with a few tomatoes too, even though I said I wouldn't. I won't be doing onions, I've got a lot of overwintering ones in, and I might get some sets in for March. The tomatoes will have been finished off by the snow, so I'll finally clear the greenhouse, and maybe get tempted by som hardy veg in modules.

round peas you can (Meteor, Feltham First etc), but not wrinkled peas (summer maincrop varieties). Keep them protected from the very cold weather until March (cloches, coldframe etc)

For the last 5 years I've sown Ailsa Craig onion seed on New Years Day as a kick start to the New Year. I'll also sow Leek 'Musselburgh' at the same time.

I bought my Kelsae onion seed today - for sowing on boxing day, though I think the OH will have a fit when I tell her my plans. I won't start my chillies til the beginning of Feb, but I plan to grow about 15 - 20 varieties this year - one half of my 24 x 60 tunnel will be dedicated to them !!
