  • New plot plant planning

    Hey all.

Well I have spent the last 2.5 months getting my new plot (half plot/odd sized plot) ready. I have 6 2.5m x 4.8m beds plus space for a shed, compost bins, kids play area etc. Below is a link to my planting guide and I was just wondering if someone could pass an eye over it see if all looks ok. Also I have included a few before/so-far pics

    Thanks in advance

You've done well. As to your planting plan, If it were me I'd devote 5 beds to veg and 1to flowers do act as a complete break from veggies - plus I'm a flower nut!

If you can, plant a green manure as well it will help improve the soil and stop the nutrients from being leached away.

This may be of interest for you

Or if you you want a book HDRA (Garden Organic) sell one called growing on the bed system by Pauline Pears that is very good as it gives spacings for each plant.

Thanks Nick for the advice and the link. Not sure about the flowers though I was kicked out of the garden because my missus wants some flowers back and got sick of potato stalks last year

I happen to know that Nick is a Geoff Hamilton fan and I think he was (Geoff that is) inspirational in my present allotment setup.
Like Nick I like to add fruit and flowers to my plot, the only difference is mine are all mixed up together.
I also buy seeds from loads of different sources and some of the seed I buy cost me very little (19 pence per packet) and produce wonderful crops.
If you grow what you like to eat and look at and keep adding a few 'oddballs' each year to keep the enthusiasm going you won't go far wrong.

The trick is, getting the stuff you've got on paper, to grow well in the soil!

PS welcome to the vine iscribe and enjoy your plot in 2010!

I have just ordered a copy of the book Nick suggested, look very good and only £4.75 new from Amazon (I am a bugger for reading everything I can on a subject, sometimes to excess).

There are dozens of good gardening books out there Iscribe and if you aren't carefull you will spend a fortune and get nothing done because you spend to much time reading. Nothing beats experience ( not that there is a lot to do this time of the year). I try to plan my allotment each year but in my head rather than on the pooter or paper because I know that come April onwards I will not have time to be looking at the pooter or looking for the grand plan. I do however admire people who can produce a plan and follow it. I can't even manage to keep a record of what I sow and plant.

Hey iscribe did you plan in that water tap location or are you just one lucky plot holder? That looks a great set up.

Your beds are quite wide to use without treading on the soil. It might be worth your while sourcing a few scaffolding boards to use or access to the middle of the beds at planting time.

              Why no fruit or asparagus?

Looks good. No tomatoes I notice - are you growing them at home? Or are you like TOH (my other half) and can't stand the things?

Welcome to the vine by the way!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
