  • Raspberry Support

    Hi all

Just got my first allotment last year, on which I planted some raspberries in the late Autumn. I have planted both summer and autumn fruiying varieties i.e. All Gold, Joan J and Glen Fyne.

I have been reading the various threads on this forum re support and from what I have read, the trend seems to be that summer fruiting varieties need support whilst there is less of a need to support the autumn varieties.

If any of you are growing the varieties that I mentioned, then are you providing them with support?

I would be most grateful for any help

    Kind regards

Hi. I think that the reason autumn rasps don't need support is that the bushes tend to be smaller (about 3-4' high). You can make a simple structure with posts and wire to support the summer fruiting types. Put two posts/stakes at each end of the row (about 2' apart), and fasten cross bars midway and near the top of each post then run wires from end to end. The rasps can then be tied in to the wire to stop the bushes flopping about, especially when laden with fruit.
