Ok been up the lottie and marked all the beds out and decided to go ahead and dig one.

Have to say the soil is brilliant. It was a bit soggy on top but I think that was down to the moss keeping the moisture at the top.

Once I had dug into the soil it was lovely and crumbly. Can't wait to get something in the ground now!

Well done, Nerdgas. Jealous, jealous , jealous of all your space! Hope you thought to pick a plot close to the water supply, cos that is one BIG site!

Now, now Creemteez - as you can see, Nerdgas is not about to re-site the plots! However the new shed on order will come in handy with a bit of guttering and a water butt!

If I had the choice to move plots I probably wouldn't (the plots were allocated to me as next in line to be released - ie no choice).

It looks as though plots in the middle have better drainage than the ones at the front and back of the field (the ones at the front are near the two water supplies). So I think I lucked out there!

And yes Jeanie a water butt and some guttering is on the list of jobs!

Oh and the site extends only up to the car park although the farmer has indicated he will release more land if the current area gets rented (about 136 plots in total).

Looks fab! Wish I lived just a tad closer to Thornbury (am in Yate) and then I would join you!

I have a landshare plot close by now but have been on the nearest waiting list for 6 years but probably won't ever get a plot as I am not on the correct side of the boundary so anyone who is can overtake me and Yate itself doesn't have allotments (apparently the council are searching for land and have 30+ on the waiting list).....

Have you thought about contacting any local farmers in the Yate area?

I don't think I would have had a chance of these plots if someone hadn't done some legwork and persuaded a local farmer that leasing his land was both likely to be profitable and good for the community.

BTW - I was born in Chipping Sodbury Maternity Hospital. My parents moved away for a few years but when I was just leaving infants school they moved back. Went to school at Abbotswood and then King Edmunds before the parents moved to Bristol when I left King Edmunds. You lived in Yate long?

nerdgas, how big is your plot? That site looks MASSIVE!! Is it the width of frame (from the fork to the paper on the floor) and all the way to the end, in line with where the cars are parked?

                      I wish!

                      You've got the width right.

If you look to the right you can see three beds marked out (one of which is the dug one). There is a line all the way across at this point which is the end of one of the plots. I have two plots and the second one is the next one towards the car park that you can see has been marked out. So in total it's about 15' x 60' (900 square feet).

I have a 'landshare plot' at the moment which has been wonderful and for the moment still have my name down for Doddington Parish allotments and potential Yate allotments. I did see a local ?farmer had advertised on Landshare and I am pondering about contacting them for a plot - I could have a shed there and it is just slightly closer than where I am now (and possibly a bigger plot and more potential to organise it better and how I want it) but I really like the space I have at the moment... Debating with myself as to whether I have time to have 2 plots on the go - would mean my garden could be a garden rather than part veg plot! Am a sahm, my youngest started school last Sept so I do have time and would like to be more self-sufficient....

I've been in Yate 10 years now, moved down from Cheshire to be with my then fiance My boys are at the primary school next to King Edmunds (which is now a posh academy!). Dh moved here from near Thornbury so he knows the Thornbury area v. well.

                          Hi again!

I was chatting to someone at the lottie today and she mentioned that she could have got an allotment at Chipping Sodbury (but ours is closer to where she lives in Tytherington) so I decided to have a look at the South Glos website and lo and behold there does appear to be some plots available at this site - apparently it's land by Goldcrest in Chipping Sodbury.

Dunno if this is any good for you but when she mentioned it to me I thought that I'd best let you know.

Just a couple more pics by way of an update.

Two more beds dug over yesterday and today (well there's no rush is there and one bed a day seems a reasonable amount of progress).

It looks as though the site is now being treated to some wood shaving to act as paths between the plots. They've only treated the boggiest bits so far but already it's looking more like an allotment than just a field with some pegs and string!

                              Pics follow:
