I'd buy plants unless you have the patience of a saint!
And then it's still at least another couple of years before you can take the spears .
    Well worth growing though!

If you have the dosh I'd buy crowns. We've got some growing from seed (last year) and although I have NO patience I'm enjoying seeing them grow.

I saw a bit of Victorian Kitchen Garden on tv yesterday and they showed the chap forcing asparagus in hotbeds - showed him 'planting' a huge 5/6 year old crown. Which is odd cos most things you read, folk go on about not moving asparagus & and don't buy 2 year old crowns cos it'll take them longer to catch-up than 1 year old. So I'm confused too?

I have done both, T&M sometimes to buy 4 get one free and I got Asparagus seeds. Very easy to grow in pots in the greenhouse. Keep them there for the first year then plant out.

The most important thing is getting the weeds out of the gound before you plant them out.

I grew seeds, I love asparagus and it's so expensive to buy in the shops. I sowed seed last year, missed planting out at the right time, but they are alive, and I've just re-planted the seedlings into larger pots. I'm just waiting to see what happens
