  • DIY cold frame

    Hi

I am hoping to get a large double glazed unit this evening, and intend to make a cold frame.
I do have some old pallet wood for the sides, does a coldframe need to have a base? It will be on my lotty.
Does it need be be lower at one side, and is it best to have the lower side facing the morning sun?

    Many thanks .. YFS

Yes it's best to have the top sloping towards the south to catch as much of the sun as possible. Also, you should allow for ventilation by hinging the lid.

The base can be sand or gravel maybe as long as it doesn't get water logged when you water the plants in it.

Joe Swift made a similar one out of an old window but used bales of straw for the walls.....built in insulation.
