I was scratching my head over this one as I thought you only got June bugs in the US.
When I googled cockchafer beetle I got the May bug which is where Paulottie may have got his Mayflies from:
    Cockchafers
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I know why they're also called cockchafers!!!......

A few years back, my BIL was opening his bedroom window as he was about to go to bed for the night.
In flew a humongous cockchafer - and landed on his dingly danglies!!!!!

Naturally he was confused as to which instinct to follow .....
          a) whack it off
          b) protect his manhood
or c) run round the bedroom flapping his arm like a girlie!!!!!!

needless to say- I wasn't there at the time, but rumour has it that he did a combination of all 3!!!!!

I seem to remember that pipistrelles enjoy a nice cockchafer of an evening - we found one with the head bitten off and decided it had been taken in flight.

My guess having re-read your OP is that it's a vine weevil- the chafer grubs aren't moving- just in a solid c shape.

It's the 'really fat' and brown head which made me think of a chafer grub.
