I'm in Yorkshire, maybe there's more interest in lotties here. The one I went to is privately owned and there's only about 12 in total, by the looks of it. I'm going to look for another allotment site tomorrow I think

          Fantastic news, BigBeefy!
That's an even quicker result than mine, and that's saying something - I joined a waiting list behind about 12 people, expecting to have to wait a year or so. 2 or 3 weeks later...

I got a copy of Your Allotment by Clare Foster from a local branch of The Works and it's been an absolute goldmine of information.
So has Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew.
(Then again, so has this site!)

I could not agree more with those who say to get things started now.

Don't hang about. You should be able to grow plenty from seed at this point... especially as the cold and late spring has delayed things a bit - a blessing in disguise if you're a newcomer or (like me) had a delay due to injury and had to get started months later than planned.

          Have a great season!

Congrats BigBeefy, that was quick. Been out on mine today and need to get there all this weekend as i've let the weeds take advantage of me.

            So how is sunny Beduff?
