  • How much Enviromesh

......will I need to cover my carrot bed? It is a raised bed, 10' x 4'.

I have looked online and it seems to be sold by the metre, in different widths.

Would it be better to make a frame from canes and build-a-balls, or make hoops with water pipe? How tall does it need to be - I'm not sure how tall the carrot foliage will grow.

I was thinking of weighing the mesh down with plastic milk containers filled with water or, if there is a hem around the enviromesh, threading string through to gather it up.

Any advice anyone? (And can anyone suggest a good online supplier?).

You can use a floating affair on carrots: the foliage doesn't get very tall, only about a foot. You certainly don't need to bother making any kind of a cage, but do make sure all the edges are held down (by piling soil around the edge)

Putting soil around the edges is fine, but it's a bit permanent! Use bricks, big stones, old bits of timber (or your milk bottles with water in) along one edge and the ends. This means you can remove the cover easily to weed (or harvest carrots!) Make sure you buy the Enviromesh wide enough, remember you need two edges to hold down, height x 2 and the width of your bed. Carrot fly flies low and is good at finding a gap! Enviromesh comes in 4 widths and is great for cabbage white caterpillar control too!
